So I'm looking at what I have in the freezer and said "HEY you should brew an all columbus IPA". 1060:60IBU sounds good to me. 12 # CMC Pale Ale Malt 1 # Wey. Dark Munich .5 # Wheat Columbus Pellets 1oz at a time 15.8%AA FWH, 10 min, 5 min and flame out. Probably dry hop this one with an ounce Any thoughts? FWH vs 60 min? Crystal vs Munich. Looking for some thoughts here. I've never brewed all columbus, heck now that I think of it I don't think I've ever used them for anything but bittering.

They can be very overpowering, but your recipe looks pretty good. They have a nice distinct flavor and aroma. I think you'll like it. Might even give it another lb. of malt to the bill to back up the Columbus.

I was actually thinking about this too. I have a bunch of Columbus pellets and Belma Leaf. I was thinking about brewing up an IPA with both, but the pellets are just so much easier!

I use a paint strainer bag for both so it is really no different either way for me.

Hopefully I don't run out of time this weekend and get this brewed. Here's the game plan:

TG: 1.067 (hoping this will end up between 1.014-1.016)
IBU: 73
Mash 150dF

12.5 # CMC Pale Ale Malt
1 # Wey. Dark Munich
8 oz Victory
8 oz C120
8 oz Detmera Sugar

.5 oz Columbus 15.8%AA FWH
.5 oz Columbus 15.8%AA 60 min
1 oz Columbus 15.8%AA 10 min
1 oz Columbus 15.8%AA 5 min
1 oz Columbus 15.8%AA DH

WLP 051 - Cali V - 500 ml of thick slurry from APA

I know there are some of you that are not fans of Crystal in IPAs but I figure 3% in a bigger beer shouldn't be out of line. I shot a little high on the IBUs because I use a hop bag and loose some there but it should be close to a 1:1 grist to IBU ratio.

I just can't leave things alone... dang game time decisions. As I was milling the grain I came across some black malt and thought hey Summit makes a red IPA that has just a touch of roast that I really like so I through in 2 oz. of Black malt as well. Then as I was approaching the end of the boil my inner hop head came to me and said, "HEY YOU BETTER PUT A FLAME OUT ADDITION IN THERE!" So I hit it with 1 oz @ flame out. I can't wait to see how this comes out.

You come thirsty to the final 5. So far I have Denny's BVIP, a maibock, a Scottish -/60, a big black lager, and a bastardized version of QSS. :)

I would try this as a hopbursted beer, i.e., throw in all the hops (except maybe for dry hops) at roughly the 10 minute mark -- no bittering addition, no dicking around with FWH, just git 'er done at 10 minutes. I've never been sorry with any beer that I hopbursted.

So... Dry hopped for 9 days and bottled today. It's this awesome redish brown color, in color only. Got it down to 1.013. Flat and warm it still tasted nice. I was worried because I had never used Columbus on a solo mission but I am pleased. Can't wait for this to get carbed up and get the full effect of the aroma.

Popped the top on a half carbed up bottle today. VERY COLUMBUS. I will not miss the hop here. However, and this is still preliminary since the beer isn't fully carbed up yet, Denny's opinion of single hopped beers being boring and one dimensional might apply here. I'll report back when I get a couple fully carb'ed ones in me.

Here it is. That black malt turned this guy brown. Awesome nose to it. Really should have had more bittering hops I think. Initially it had some of that onion/garlicy aroma but it faded and was real nice. It's been a couple months now and unfortunately this one is starting to fade. Not sure I'd make it again but the beer came out nice.
